(257) Impact of Processing Induced Mesophases on Dexamethasone Release in Polycaprolactone Matrices
Introduction: The advancement of polymeric materials, formulation strategies, and processing techniques demands efficient evaluation methods for drug delivery systems. Two-dimensional X-ray diffraction (2D-XRD) enables structural characterization of polymer/drug matrices and processing effects, such as high-pressure flow and disrupted crystallization. These conditions can induce mesophase states, intermediate between crystalline and amorphous structures, in biodegradable polymers. Often overlooked, mesophases profoundly affect drug release kinetics, underscoring their consideration in drug delivery systems.
Learning Objectives:
Utilize XRD to quantify the effects of drug loading in different polymer/ drug interactions
Understand the effects of processing and mesophase formation to create better release mechanics
Understand the effects polymer/drug interactions on the release through polymeric microstructure
