(478) Formulation and Screening of Ionic Liquid APIs for Transdermal Delivery
Introduction: Transdermal drug delivery (TDD) is limited by poor drug penetration across stratum corneum. Ionic liquids (ILs), organic salts that remain liquid below 100°C, could address these limitations via unique properties from dual ionic and organic properties. ILs have been used as formulation excipients to improve drug solubility, stability, and bioavailability.[1] Here, we have studied converting APIs into ionic liquids (i.e., IL-API), focusing on anti-inflammatory IL-APIs. We screened and optimized IL-APIs for enhanced TDD, while exploring the physical properties that affect efficacy.
Learning Objectives:
Identify how drugs formulated as ionic liquids can enhance transdermal delivery
Identify factors in ion pairing and formulation development that can affect transdermal delivery
