Tech Session II: Nanomedicine and Nanoscale Delivery (Focus: Nervous)
Rapid Cooling and Neuroprotection: Intranasal Vanilloid Nanodrugs for Acute Brain Injuries
Tuesday, July 15, 2025
3:38 PM - 3:49 PM EDT
Location: 120 B/C
Introduction: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and ischemic stroke cause long-term neurological deficits due to secondary injury mechanisms like excitotoxicity, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress. Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is a promising neuroprotective strategy, but current cooling methods are invasive, slow, and have systemic risks. We propose a nanodrug-based approach for rapid TH induction via intranasal vanilloid nanodrugs activating the TRPV1 receptor, achieving localized brain cooling and neuroprotection.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, participants will know
Describe the role of TRPV1-activating nanodrugs in inducing therapeutic hypothermia
Compare intranasal nanodrug delivery to conventional cooling methods for therapeutic hypothermia
Assess the translational potential of nanodrug-based neuroprotective strategies for stroke and TBI
