Biomedical interventions in women's health are in need of innovative women-centered drug delivery systems (DDS). The vaginal route of delivery has been underutilized but renewed R&D efforts are reaching clinical trials in the form of rings, films, and inserts. Long-acting systemic DDS are also highly preferred by women. Examples of advances in this area are biodegradable implants, injectable hydrogels and in situ forming implants, and microneedle patches. Innovative ways to control drug release and extend duration and early feedback from women, the end user, are essential to the successful introduction, uptake and adherence of new products in women’s health.
