Polymersome assay for point-of-care blood urea diagnostics in dialysis patients

Introduction: Developing a point-of-care urea blood test enables urea monitoring directly at the patient’s bedside during dialysis (1). This immediate feedback allows healthcare providers to tailor dialysis sessions more precisely to preventing complications such as toxin buildup and electrolyte imbalances (2). In contrast, current clinical practice relies on time-consuming laboratory testing (1). To improve their quality of care by streamlining the monitoring process and potentially enabling home-based or remote care solutions, we developed a polymersome assay for urea sensing in whole blood.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this activity, participants will know
Understand the relevance of blood urea monitoring during dialysis in patients with kidney disease
Understand how transmembrane pH-gradient polymersomes can be used to sense urea
Understand the relevance of validating the blood urea assay in fresh capillary blood
