Paola is Full Professor of Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Bern, Switzerland. Her research is focused on the design and characterization of lipid-based, bio-derived and bio-inspired drug delivery systems for the treatment of chronic multifactorial diseases, such as fibrosis, endometriosis and inflammatory diseases. Together with her interdisciplinary team, she explores novel patient-centric drug delivery strategies, using, amonth others, additive manufacturing and 3D cell models.
Paola was Vice-President and is current President of the CRS DeChAt Local Chapter, and was recently elected Vice-President Science of the Swiss Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences. She serves as specialist for Pharmaceutical Quality in the Human and Veterinary Medicine Committees of Swissmedic, as expert of the Nanomedicine Working Group of the European Pharmacopoeia, and as member of Scientific Advisory Council of the Phospholipid Research Center. In 2023, she co-founded the interfaculty Centre for Extracellular Vesicles Research of the University of Bern.
A determined advocate for gender equality, diversion and inclusion, Paola served as member of the Equal Opportunity Committee of the Faculty of Science at UniBE and mentor for the SCS Swiss Women in Chemistry. She is active mentor of the Young Committee YCS Mentoring program and the European Pharmaceutical Students’ Association EPSA.
